Case Study 2: Group Coaching

Background Context:
A group of senior managers in a public sector organisation, who were identified to pilot an innovative approach to leadership development.

The Need:
Coaching was already available within this organisation and it was felt that something more group-oriented would have wider organizational impact.

The EQ Intervention including features of delivery:

  • Assessments of Emotional Intelligence (using the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory, or EQ-i) were made at the beginning and end of the programme.
  • Personal feedback was collected from six observers of each individual senior manager so that perspectives on their leadership could be gathered from a wider group of interested stakeholders.
  • A group emotional intelligence profile was computed at the beginning and end of the programme.
  • A series of five 4-hour meetings and a final one-day workshop were designed and implemented, each focusing on a particular leadership theme. Each meeting had specific follow up actions pre-designed and notes were sent from each meeting with summaries of discussions.

The Results:

  • This was a highly cost effective method for developing a leadership group Ð the per head cost was 40% less than a coaching equivalent.
  • The increase in emotional intelligence was significant, with similar magnitude of change to personal coaching.
