Case Study 7: Combination Individual/Group interventions
Background Context:
21 Senior managers from a medical legal organisation.
The Need:
To increase the self-awareness of senior managers and increase their functioning.
The EQ Intervention including features of delivery:
- Assessments of Emotional Intelligence (using the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory, or EQ-i) were made at the beginning and end of the programme.
- A group emotional intelligence profile was computed at the beginning and end of the programme.
- Three one-day workshops were planned for senior managers on different themes.
- 8 hours of coaching were provided to each of five managers. This coaching programme was based on Ei World's four key factors for success in coaching.
- A group coaching programme was set up for an additional 8 managers.
- A buddy system of support was created.
The Results:
- The recomputation of the group emotional intelligence profile confirmed that there was a highly significant increase in Emotional Quotient (EQ).
- The group profile is so different now that it is possible to consider other forms of learning (more group learning for instance).
- The dynamic within the group has changed significantly - more conducive to getting the best from each other.
- Three key individuals have been promoted to the Executive Team.
Testimonials
We knew we were not functioning well and we probably didn't need a graph to tell us. But we did have a graph and we improved how we worked. The change is visible.
- Degree of guided and focused introspection.
- Mechanisms used were interesting.
- Affirmations are something you have to believe in.
- The importance of avoiding comparisons - rather than having someone's yard stick, have your own.
- Somebody external to the organisation validating for you your positive points and giving you the ability to work on the negative points that have been holding you back.
- Comes on the foot of having the EQi evaluation - first session useful.
- Little systems (SOAR, SCORE) make a difference (but you discovered this later, at the time they were somewhat of an irritation!).
- Conversations helped to set the tools into context.
- Useful for you as you feel we have got along well so the matching of SMG person to Coach is very important.
- Notes are enormously helpful.
- The change is part of an overall change which I consider is visible in the senior group of this organisation (6 months ago I dreaded going to a meeting, now I look forward to senior meetings). I appreciated that I gained a lot from the programme. It made me confront things I would not have confronted. I have focused on what is key to me, rather than everything.
- The initial EQi gave me more confidence. The process of coaching gave me focus. I was enabled to translate the EQi results into behavioural changes (in Independence, Reality Testing and Optimism).
