Case Study 8: Whole sector development
Background Context:
Education sector in a socially disadvantaged area.
The Need:
To implement emotional intelligence awareness to a group of Principals, teachers and school staff in a group of schools, over a number of years of phased development.
The EQ Intervention including features of delivery:
- Five Principals participated in the first year of this programme and their 70 teachers.
- Three Principals participated in the second year of this programme with 52 school staff (including teachers).
- Each Principal participated in a coaching and leadership development programme involving 6 or 8 hours of coaching and 4 workshop days centered around leadership themes.
- School staff participated in three days of workshop over an academic year EQ and YOU workshop, Team Development and Skills Development.
- EQ assessments were conducted at the beginning and end of each year.
- A group emotional intelligence profile was computed at the beginning and end of each year showing the sector EQ profile.
The Results:
- Evidence of a signficant increase in emotional intelligence amongst the Principals and teachers who completed the repeat EQ assessment.
- Evidence of behavioural change evidenced by a variety of important changes which have occurred in the pilot schools (Level 3). School EQ profiles changed also.
- High degree of 'learning' achieved as evidenced by end of programme evaluation.
- High degree of 'customer satisfaction' as measured by Reaction level.
- Significant initiatives were taken in all schools leading to better pupil, parent and teacher relationships.
